This is area where coaches and players focus a lot and there is no doubt that having a technique that produces the outcomes we desire is at the foundation of any successful player. But just remember there is not just one way of doing things and we are all individuals.
The Basics - These are anything but, they are the foundation on which everything else is built.
Grip, Stance, Bat swing, Contact position.
The Grip must allow you to be able to get the face of the bat towards the ball at the point of contact consistently. It must also allow the hands and arms to work together. Be comfortable and feel natural - this comes from practice and repetition.
The Stance must allow the batter to be balanced and able to move both back, forward and across the crease. The batter should be comfortable and relaxed. The stance if often made up of 2 parts the initial and the action position. In both these parts it is optimum that the player is balance with the head directly over the feet, with eyes level and pointing towards the bowler.
Bat Swing is the swing that the shoulders, arms and hands make to deliver the bat to the ball. The 2 main swings are vertical and horizontal. The vertical bat swing is unique to cricket and has been developed over time to ensure a greater success in hitting the ball. It is important to learn this technique but if it does not achieve the result of hitting the ball more regularly and helping the batter to score runs then it is failing in its objective.
Contact Position is the point at which the bat makes contact with the ball in relation to the batter. to keep it simple I like to think about 3 positions to contact the ball - (1) under the eyes - most vertical bat shots; (2) Infront of the eyes - most horizontal shots to the legside; (3) Beside the eyes - most horizontal bat shots on the offside.
